Learn Public Speaking By Picking Up Women

From Dean Hunt
I had a wacky thought recently… can you learn the skills required to be a good public speaker by picking up women?
Sounds crazy doesn’t it… but according to experts, the key areas to pickup up women are things like:

  • Body language,
  • Humour,
  • Voice tonality,
  • Inner and Outer Confidence (and a good mindset)

Which is also a similar set of skills required to be a good public speaker.

I’ve seen this story getting picked up in a few places today and I’ve even commented on one of them. Okay, I think it’s a great analogy and there’s lots in it, but it’s got a problem when you follow on from it too far….
When you’re “picking up women” what you’re “selling” is yourself: when you’re public speaking, what you’re “selling” is your content, NOT yourself. One of the things we work most on in our training courses is remind people that they’re not why people are there – no one comes to hear you, me or anyone else speak (Bill Clinton etc excepted!); what people come to hear is our message about X, Y or Z.
We’re not the message, we’re the medium! That’s pretty liberating for first-time public speakers!
